TRIP SEPT 2024
DAY 6 - FRIDAY - SEPT 13, 2024
GREEN BAY WI |
Day 6 started out in Green Bay WI. We drove around a little,
finding a few Fire Stations before driving diagonally across the
heart of Wisconsin north toward Duluth MN.
|
WISCONSIN CEMENT PARK |
We have driven by a lot of corn fields and other farm lands
already. Something we actually stopped and turned around to see is called the Wisconsin Cement Park. It is located a little south of Phillips WI, about half way between Green Bay and Duluth. A guy named Fred Smith apparently was the creater of a vast number of cement figures that are simply amazing. One of the most unusual things we have come across in our travels. |
SUPERIOR WI |
Superior WI is located in the upper left corner of Wisconsin at
the very western end of Lake Superior, our fifth Great Lake.
On the shore, we observed this very interesting structure. There was a marina and boat ramp at its base, but it was obviously old and build for some purpose. Further research indicate the the 1,850 foot long steel and cement structure was built in 1913 and operated by the Northern Pacific Railway as an Ore Dock. Apparently, iron ore, mined to the west at the Cuyuna mines (near Crosby MN), was brought here by rail and loaded onto ships, to be made into iron and steel. Looking around Superior, we found an old Fire Station built in
1898, that has become a Fire and Police Museum. Unfortunately the
classic old firehouse was not open. |
DULUTH MN |
The primary reason for coming all the way up to Duluth was to
find their FIREBOAT. The good looking boat was exactly where we
thought it would be and was quite easy to photograph. We
underestimated the size and significance of this city, but soon
found a good area to hang out for the evening.

FIREBOAT COUNT: (1) For Day / (15) For Trip |
DULUTH MN |
The Superior / Duluth area is where the St Louis River flows to
Lake Superior. The city is located on a significant hill, that
overlooks the large harbor. The bridge and breakwater light houses
make a great area to see the power of the lake. We got a hotel overlooking the shore and found dinner for Night 6 in Duluth.
