Our Southern Trip - Day 2 - Shin Kobe to Hiroshima

Morning in Kobe
Our day started out at Hotel Okura Kobe. We got packed up early and checked out of the Hotel.

Kobe - Japan Coast Guard Fireboat
We watched this Japanese Coast Guard Firefighting vessel head out yesterday.
This morning it returned to port in Kobe.

Leaving Kobe
We had a brief stay in Kobe. This morning we walked back through the city to the train station.
That is a big fish right there.

We appreciate Buddha's belly.

Hmmm... We were not quite sure what this overhead statue was all about, but decided to walk on the other side of the street just the same.

This walkway within a train station looked more like a hotel hallway with mirrored ceilings and nice tile. The yellow "sight impaired" pathway continues down the hall.

Interestingly (and still unexplained), the preferred side to ride escalators in Kobe is to the right, rather than the left.

These ready to go "Bento Box" meals are available in the Shin-Kobe Train Station.

Shin-Kobe to Skin-Hiroshima
We boarded the Shin in Kobe, headed for Hiroshima.

The inside of the Shin. Quite comfortable.

Skin-Hiroshima
We arrived in Hiroshima. The ride was just over an hour or so.

A good example of how the gates stop you from coming or going, until you swipe your card.

Need Help?
Helpful people prepared to answer questions in the Hiroshima train station.

Street Cars
Hiroshima has a nice network of Street Cars to get around. This one came very close to our hotel.

ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel
We arrived at our hotel in Hiroshima and got checked in.

View from the hotel overlooking Hiroshima.

One of a number of islands in the harbor.

An impressive intersection is also pedestrian friendly. Street cars run thru the middle.

Our Fancy Lunch
We experienced a very tasty "Quality vs Quantity" Japanese style meal. It included a considerable variety of interesting dishes (most unidentified). Lots of flavors and textures. Very filling and satisfying.

Overall, voted the Best Meal of the entire trip.

Hotel Restaurant
The restaurant is located on the 5th Floor. Outside the restaurant was an impressive Coy pool and garden, on the roof of part of the hotel. Pretty cool!

The Moment the World Changed
When we hear the word Hiroshima, we obviously think of the Moment the World Changed.
That was on August 6, 1945.

We did not really know what to expect as we walked from the hotel, across the Peace Bridge, to the Hiroshima Memorial Museum.

Some of the images of this powerful experience follow.

Hiroshima Memorial Museum
The Museum illustrated what the city of Hiroshima, and the people living there at the time were like, before, during, and after the Bomb. The historical stories described are difficult to imagine, but important to share.

Atomic Bomb Dome
One of the structures that still stands today is known now as the Atomic Bomb Dome.

A Hiroshima Fire Station
One of the Hiroshima Fire Stations damaged in 1945.

Life Goes On
Somehow, the people of Hiroshima recovered and rebuilt. Life does go on.
The amazing power of the Human Spirit.

Street Crossing
One of the wide crossings in Hiroshima.

Craft Beers
We found a local Craft Beer place. And it was good.

Hotel Beer Garden
The ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel had a roof top "Beer Garden" restaurant.

We had a little meal and beverages overlooking the city at sunset.

People are the same everywhere. These folks got a big kick out of our little guy and actually invited him to sit with them a few minutes, which he did. Priceless!

GOOD NIGHT HIROSHIMA!
