IKEGO

IKEGO - Home Base
Ikego is protected by a US Navy Fire Station 2.

The Fire Station is well equipped and staffed.

A typical ambulance in Japan.

The Emergency Number in Japan is 1-1-9 (rather than 911).

Ikego FD
As we were approaching the Ikego Fire Station, we heard the alerting tones and saw the guys dressing for a call. We got to see E2-1 and E2-2 respond, almost across the street, for what appeared to be an AFA. Photo opp!

The Pierce engines look like apparatus back home. The difference is that the driver is on the right side of the truck, as is the pump panel.

Back at Ikego. The crew is out in Engine 2-1 doing inspections.

KAMAKURA

Fire Station
If you didn't know it was there, you would miss it. This is one of the many (reserve) volunteer type fire stations in Japan. Used primarily during extreme emergencies and disasters, like earthquakes.

We're not sure exactly what is in there. While main fire stations are known as a "Shobosho", these fire stations appear to be known as a "Shobo-Dan-dai". This one had a map painted on the door.

Zushi Fire Headquarters
The evening Papa Walk brought us to the Zushi Fire Headquarters and some great apparatus.

A Pumper on the left and a Super Rescue type truck.

The Zushi Ladder truck and a smaller reserve pumper.

A typical ambulance and some support vehicles.

A golf cart type vehicle used for fire prevention and events.

Definitely worth the trip!

Road Trip
So, he got his morning apparatus checks done early.

What if Papa was to pack things up, and take him into Zushi, to visit the Fire Headquarters?!

ROAD TRIP! So off we go, with him in his stroller, taking the train from (KK-52) to (KK-53).
It is a good walk from the train station to Zushi HQ. It was hot and humid again.

One of the Zushi guys gave us a great tour of the apparatus. The little guy had a great time.

It doesn't get much better than this. Some quality Papa and Bubba time, with fire trucks and trains.

The North Zushi Fire Station.
Zushi has 3 staffed "Shoboshos"  This Station was conveniently on the way back to Ikego.

PAGE 3 - DAY 5 - SEPT 9, 2023

A little farther up the street, near the Jimmuji Train Station, is another "Shobo-Dan-dia", unstaffed station.

The end of another day in Japan. What a great day!

Tokyo FD - The Marunouchi Fire Station
On the way to the Imperial Palace Gardens, Papa decided to take advantage of the nice sunny day. While doing prior research, he knew that the Tokyo Fire Headquarters (tall white building) and the Marunouchi Fire Station were just a block away. A quick run up the street for some photos. It was a Sunday, and there was almost no noise or traffic. Perfect for photos.

It is so nice to see open doors and fire apparatus visible to the public. A quickly removed, soft netting helps maintain safety.

Command car for incident commander

Command Truck. Large unit used anywhere in the city for large incidents.

Ladder truck.

Yokosuka Fire Stations
We passed one of the Yokosuka City Fire Stations (Shobosho) frequently. This station is in an area known as Taura. It is equipped with an Engine, Ladder, Rescue Truck, and several support vehicles.

The crew, dressed in orange jumpsuits, are preparing to check their apparatus and equipment.
They also meet to go over concerns, training, exercising and stretching together, and everything else that goes on at a firehouse.

Engine, Rescue, and Ladder. A full house.

Yokosuka City Fire Bureau HQ
Yokosuka City Fire Headquarters is an impressive building with a large compliment of apparatus.

In the afternoon, after some shopping, we made a quick stop at this fire station for some photos.

There is a large compliment of apparatus.

One of the interesting things here, is that there are no overhead doors. Apparatus almost looks like they are parked where doors would be closing. On closer examination, it looks like the door system comes from both sides of the station on tracks and wraps around in front of the apparatus. I did not see this happen. Thankfully, the doors are usually open and apparatus is on display.

Yokohama Fireboat Visit
It took a little doing, including a long walk in the heat, but we did finally make it to the Yokohama Tsurumi Fire Station, where the Yokohama Fireboats are located.

We were welcomed and given a wonderful tour of the Fireboat "Yokohama."
A second boat, ordinarily docked here, was out for maintenance and not available.

Apparatus at the station includes an Engine and a Water Rescue Truck.

Tokyo FD - Rinko Fire Station & Fireboats
The Tokyo FD, Rinko Fire Station is an impressive Fire Station. The station is only a few years old.
I arrived early, and was around as the station came to life with morning apparatus checks.

The Emergency Number in Japan is 1-1-9. Similar to the USA 9-1-1.

Rinko Fire Apparatus
The Rinko Fire Station has several apparatus. The crews were doing their apparatus checks this morning. I was able to talk with, and share a patch with the crew.

The ambulance.

A Command vehicle.

A Command Car.

The Primary Engine, a pumper equipped with a water tank, ground ladder, and plenty of equipment.

A secondary, reserve Engine.

There is no Ladder Truck assigned to the Rinko Station, but this one from near by just happened to come along while I was there. Thank you!

A nice visit at Rinko. Time to get back to the family.

Chiba Fire Bureau
About an hour train ride north of our hotel in Tokyo, is the City of Chiba. It was another hot, humid day. It was a pretty good walk from the train station to the Fire Station at the Port of Chiba.

The Chiba Fire Station complex included several buildings and the Fireboat dock.

The primary Chiba Fire Station includes these apparatus bays, the administrative building on the left, and the drill tower on the right.

The Engines.

To the left of the Administrative building, are these two structures which house the Rescue and Special units.

The Super Rescue Chiba Truck.

Back in the Fire Station, the same guys showed some of the apparatus and explained, with Translator, how some things work.  The blue turnouts are worn on medical calls. Shorts of hose are stored above turnout gear.

There are apparently two types of Engines. The one of the right would be the attack truck. It has a portable water tank, about 1800 Liters (approx 500 gallons).

The portable water tank.

The other Engine, is considered the supply Engine. It doesn't have a water tank, but is equipped with a motorized portable hose cart, with hundreds of feet of hose, that can be brought up narrow streets to a fire scene.

The motorized portable hose cart.

The coiled "hard suction" hose on the sides or Engines, or in compartments like this, are used to connect to hydrants underground, or to draft if necessary.

The guys demonstrate how an attack line is set up. Couplings are a quick snap together. No spanners needed. Hoses are not pre-connected, but are stored in a compartment, already in an accordion ready to be advanced. Quick and easy.

The Super Rescue Chiba is a heavy rescue, equipped with a crane, and plenty of equipment.

Rear of the Super Rescue.

The next bay houses some of the special units.

On the left is something of a "Toilet Truck" that apparently has several bathroom facilities that are used during long term incidents.

In the center, is a vehicle that is much like an RV. It is equipped with sleeping facilities, also used for long term incidents.

To the right, is a super duty ventilation truck, equipped with a large fan and hose.

The ventilation truck.

Thank you to the guys at Chiba for sharing everything with me!

Arigato!
