DAY 27

A ride on the Port of Portland, OR ARFF Fireboat 80

DAY 27 - SEPT 28 - WEDNESDAY
Another beautiful day started out at Cascade Locks on the Columbia River east of Portland, OR. We then made a stop at the Port of Portland ARFF Fireboat dock getting some great photos of the boat in its boathouse, on the river, and underway on the river.  Thanks much to the crew for a very informative and enjoyable demonstration of their boat.

We then made our way into the city of Portland and to Station 21. Engine 21 was just returning to quarters from a run as we arrived. They give me a great tour of one of their newest boats, Fire Boat 21 along with their river rescue boat 21. The tour was cut short by another engine response, but we appreciate the time we had there.

Across the river and downstream a couple miles from Fireboat 21 is Station 6. Behind Station 6 is a boathouse which turned out to be the a great surprise of the day. The 1927 87' long 12,000 gpm Fireboat "David Campbell" is one of the few older classic boats left in service. Awesome.

We learned that we had missed a couple boats back at Station 17 yesterday.  We made another stop and got a look at the "new" Fireboat 17 (twin to Fireboat 21) and their river rescue boat 17. Again, the crew was great providing access to these boats.

We followed the Columbia River west to the coast near Astoria and a campground for Night 27. A full and successful day.
