Legacy & Future
We couldn't pass up the photo opportunity.

To the west of Zushi and Kamakura, is a seaside community known as Enoshima. It has beautiful beaches enjoyed by many surfers and others. A fishing fleet uses harbors to dock vessels. It is a popular area for tourists to enjoy.

One of the attractions, is the Enoshima Aquarium. We took advantage on a Sunday morning to check it out. It was great!

Jelly Fish
The Enoshima Aquarium, like many Aquariums, has wonderful displays of things not otherwise seen.
The displays of jelly fish are always fascinating.

Overlooking the beach at Enoshima, is the Dolphin tank at the Aquarium. Great performance.

Enoshima Beaches
People were enjoying the hot, sunny Sunday at the beach. A lot of surfboarders, as well as families were enjoying all this area has to offer.

Exploring Enoshima
After enjoying the Aquarium with the family, Papa decided to walk the shore and explore the area and find his own was back by a combination of walking and trains. There were many interesting things to see, and the adventure was fun.

Fire Departments
Obviously, we are always looking for Fire Stations and apparatus. These trucks just happened to be going by at the right time. Apparently a Rescue truck with a watercraft and an engine following.

Shobo dan
This small Fire Station is located just off the main road in Enoshima. One of many volunteer type "Shobo dan" stations. This one is obviously a fire station with the painting on the door.

The Train
One of the things that caught my eye coming into town, was the seaside train that hugged the shore.
It is part of the Enoshima Electric Train Line. It looked like a fun train to ride and it was!

Another example of a "Waffle Wall" rising steeply up the hillside from the street and railroad.

Homes are also built on the side of these hills overlooking the sea. Some on top of the hill.

Cars
Vehicles are definitely more compact here. There are many choices of vehicles. Small on the outside, but quite comfortable and roomy inside.

Kamakura
One the way back, we stopped at Kamakura once again to get something to eat and do a little shopping. Many people out on a Sunday afternoon.

There were a number of options for a late lunch. Some very different and some pretty familiar.

Late Lunch
We opted for a small bowl of spicy chicken and a familiar beverage. Not bad.

Nana Playground
While Papa was on his adventure, Nana enjoyed the afternoon at the playground.

We all ended up together. And it was good!

A New Week - A New Day - And more Fireboats
We enjoyed a nice weekend. Now, back to work. It is Monday and there are still Fireboats to be found. We started out at Jimmuji (KK-52) and headed for Tokyo.

Hakkei
We made our train change at Hakkei and continued into Tokyo, headed for the Hamacho-Sumida River Fireboat Station to see if we can find those boats.

Nihonbashi Fire Station
The walk from the train / subway station, to the Sumida River, passed this Tokyo Fire Station tucked away between some buildings in the Nihonbashi neighborhood. It was well marked by this sign.
Lights flash to alert the public when apparatus responds.

Sumida River
The Sumida River is one of the large rivers running through Tokyo.

We took the River/Harbor Cruise down the Sumida back on September 16. It was on a vessel like this one known as the "Hotaluna" with lots of windows and the low profile design allowing it under bridges.

We had hoped to see the Tokyo Fireboats at the Hamacho - Sumida Fire Station that day, but the boats were not there that day.

The hope today, is to find those Fireboats. A nice walk along the river gave time to appreciate some of the bridges and traffic on the river.

Fireboat Dock
The Sumida Fireboat Dock at the Hamacho Fire Station is marked by some signs with the 1-1-9 Emergency Number. There is a floating dock here. It is home to (2) fireboats.

Finding Fireboats is sometimes a "Hit or Miss" adventure. There are various levels of uncertainty. Today, when we arrived, the dock was vacant. It would be disappointing to miss out again today.

One of the Firefighters (An officer?) came down to the dock from the nearby station. It looked like he was waiting and preparing lines on the dock. We decided to hang around a little longer.

In the distance is Skytree.

Here They Come!
After a few minutes, the two Tokyo Fireboats came into sight coming up the river under the bridge!

The boats would go on to make several approaches to the dock (practicing/training), before finally tying up securely at the dock.

The two Sumida Fireboats made the way up the river to the dock.

Hamacho Fire Station
The Hamacho Fire Station in Tokyo is located under an elevated highway, walking distance to the Sumida River Fireboat dock.

Another example of a Fire Hydrant manhole cover.

So Far So Good
Having successfully found the Sumida Fireboats, and having plenty of afternoon left, we decided to go back to the Rinko Fire Station to see if the "Big Boat" was there or not.

Getting across town once again brought us underground through the network of trains, subways, and buses. This particular underground hallway between stations, reminded me of my old High School hallway. But much longer, and once again, with the sight impaired path on the right.

Tokyo - Fireboat "Miyakadoi"
The Largest Tokyo Fireboat was built in 2013. It is 43m (about 140 ft) x 8m (26 ft) equipped with multiple large water cannons.

This vessel had been missing on my original visit to Rinko Station on September 16, so it was very pleasing to see it here this day.

Tokyo Rinko Fleet
It was a great afternoon. The Tokyo Rinko Fireboat Fleet was all here.

The second largest boat "Oedo", the smaller boats "Hrumi" and "Shibuki" and others.

We had wondered whether a view from across the channel would be possible and sought out to find out with another good walk around the channel.

With Purpose
The walk from the Rinko Fire Station, around the channel, to the other side was interesting.

Rather than orange cones or Jersey barriers, these are used to help direct traffic and pedestrian flow.
So many things here are done with purpose, including the coloring added to the outside of buildings that make them recognizable from far away.

Rinko Fireboats - From the other side
The Tokyo Fireboats docked at the Rinko Fire Station. Timing is everything.

Several boats were training and in motion by coincidence on this afternoon.

Dinner in Hakkei
After a very successful day in Tokyo, we got off the train in Hakkei for dinner.

A Ramon dish and a cold one definitely rounded out the day.
