DAY 2 - Wednesday

SEPTEMBER 14

EAST MORICHES

Day 2 started out in Riverhead.
Today is our 37th Anniversary.

The journey to find fireboats is sometimes based on a hunch or something seen online.
Often the attempt to find a boat with little or no information is successful.
Other times it is not successful or you miss a boat you wanted to find.
Fortunately the journey takes you to places, interesting things, and people
you might not have seen or met otherwise.

East Moriches fire station

The East Moriches "Stump Jumper" is more representative of the Long Island "Style"
of many of the brush trucks out here. Many also serve as High Water Rescue trucks
with the ability to carry quite a few people should the need come up.

Some of these departments have been around for awhile.

CENTER MORICHES

Another impressive fire station in Center Moriches.
With the help of a few folks here we were able to find the Center Moriches Fire Boat
which was not at any of the places were had expected it might be.
Thanks for the help on that!

The Center Moriches boat was definitely worth looking for.
A good looking boat on a beautiful day.

MASTIC

Mastic and Mastic Beach have a couple boats based on the online searches.
We checked several potential spots that would be logical locations for them
to dock. Unfortunately, we could not find them this trip.

We will have to come back again some day.

BELLPORT

One of the boats I had photographed in the past is this one in Bellport.
We made a quick stop to see if it was still there.
Yup. Same spot. Same boat. Reassuring.

PATCHOGUE

We have been out to Long Island a few times in the past.
A lot of the departments along the shore have fireboats.

The Patchogue Fireboat was among the departments I had done before,
but they had sold that "old" boat a year or so ago to Bowleys Quarters, MD.

We hoped to find their "new" boat if we could.

The "Old" Patchogue boat was kept in a different location than the new boat.

The "New" Patchogue Fireboat in its new location.
We almost missed it, but thanks to a little help, we found it.

MEDFORD

It would have been easy to stay along the south shore of Long Island.
But the trip plan calls for getting over to the north shore.
It is our anniversary and too many fireboats could be too many fireboats today.

Cutting across the middle of the Island took us past this amazing fire station
in Medford. The flag caught they eye and required a photo.

PORT JEFFERSON

Port Jefferson is located on the north shore.

We were not sure where we would stay, but figured a stay in Port Jefferson for Night 2
would make sense and enable us to take the ferry from Port Jeff to Bridgeport, CT
in the morning.

We had a late lunch down by the water, walked around a little, and checked out the sights.

Across the street from where we had lunch was a large, older "non-chain" hotel.
It was actually surprisingly well priced and convenient to the ferry dock.

Danfords Hotel & Marina was definitely a treat.

A room with a view.
Yes. This will do!
Night Two!
