2018 BMA Disaster Drill
Crews from many of the Cape's fire departments participated in the
2018 Barnstable Municipal Airport Disaster Drill on September 5, 2018.

This year, the scenario involved a mid-air collision with one aircraft crashing into Lewis Bay
requiring a marine rescue response of several fire rescue boats conducting search & rescue,
search patterns, and rescue operations on the water.  The second aircraft crash landed at the
airport with over 20 patients on board.

Shortly after 1700 hours on a pleasant Wednesday evening, the response was initiated.
The BMA ARFF Truck 820 arrived first and began fighting the fires while Hyannis
crews arrived and began establishing an MCI command structure, triaging patients, setting
up treatment areas, and conducting extrication on various wrecked vehicles.
Additional crews from COMM, Barnstable, West Barnstable, Yarmouth, Dennis,
Brewster, Harwich, Chatham, Orleans, Eastham, and Sandwich worked together
actually transporting patients to CCH where the triage and treatment continued
providing hospital staff with the MCI experience.

Similar drills are held about every 3 years to keep the airport and emergency
crews well trained in Mass Casualty Incidents.

The Priority 3 patients ,who could walk, are further evaluated once help arrived

Many of the victims looked and acted as real patients

Patients who were unable to walk on their own due to more severe injuries
required transport by various crews to treatment areas
