Department History

1928 - DEPARTMENT ESTABLISHED
Bourne Fire Department established

1994 - STATION 2 REBUILT
The 1890's Monument Beach Firehouse Station 2 is extensively rebuilt.

1994 - POLICE BEGIN FIRE DISPATCHING
After many years of Bourne Fire Department providing its own dispatch, the Bourne Police Department assumes dispatching responsibilities for the BFD.

1994 - STATION 4 REOPENED
After several years of being closed, the Pocasset Station #4 is reopened with 2 on duty firefighters. Engine 124 and Rescue 135 are assigned.

1998 - BARNSTABLE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT FIRE DISPATCHING
After 4 years of dispatching by the Bourne Police Department, the BFD moves its dispatching service to the Barnstable Sheriff's Department.

 

Apparatus History

1994 - ENGINE 122
A new International 4 door / Emergency One pumper is assigned as Engine 2 at Station 2 in Monument Beach. The 1968 Maxim 'S' Engine 2 is relocated to Station 4, replacing a 1972 Maxim 'F' pumper which is then loaned to the Sandwich Fire Department until taken out of service in 1994.

1995 - ENGINE 124
Another International 4 door / Emergency One pumper is designated Engine 4 at Station 4 in Pocasset replacing the 1968 Maxim S pumper.

1995 - LAST MAXIM S PUMPER RETIRES
The 1968 Maxim S pumper which served duty in all of Bourne's stations is finally retired, going out of service as Engine 124. This was the last of Cape Cod's many Maxim S models to serve.

 

Personnel History

July 1991 - FIREFIGHTER LAYOFFS
Financial problems in Bourne lead to the layoff of 12 out of 36 fulltime personnel. Two of the three staffed stations are closed, the "southside ambulance" is discontinued. Prop 2-1/2 overrides were unsuccessful until 1994 when the Pocasset Fire Station was reopened with an amnulance.

1992 - FIRE CHIEF STEVEN C PHILBRICK
Deputy Chief Steven C Philbrick becomes the Bourne Fire Chief. Lt Charles W. Klueber is promoted to Deputy Chief..

1999 - ACTING FIRE CHIEF
Deputy Chief Charles W Klueber becomes the acting Chief of the Bourne Fire Department.

 

Major Fires History

December 22, 1981 - SHIP FIRE
Mass Maritime Academy training ship - 532 foot "Bay State" - burns at the MMA dock. Multi-alarm response brings units from all over Cape area. 1 MMA cadet is killed in the late afternoon fire.

 
  April 1, 1991 - 0030 hours - 4 ALARM FIRE
4 Alarms are struck for a building fire at the China Bay chinese restaurant at the Buzzards Bay rotary. The fire, later determined to be arson, took several hours to extinguish using multiple master streams.

  August 25, 1993 - 0118 hours - 3 ALARM FIRE
Six towns provided mutual aid to a spectacular early morning fire that destroyed the former Sagamore Lumber Company off Freight House Road in South Sagamore. The structure was flattened and threatened three nearby propane tanks....(1) 30,000 and (2) 18,000 gallon tanks.
 
  November 27, 1994 - 1551 hours - 3 ALARM FIRE
A large 100 year old mansion on the shore at the end of Monument Neck Road was destroyed by a spectacular, stubborn fire. Water supply and access problems contributed to the difficult battle in the multi-million dollar loss.

September 1988 - FATAL ACCIDENT
A tractor trailer truck traveling in the wrong lane onto the northside approach to the Bourne Bridge strikes several cars. The resulting fire and injuries takes the lives of 2 people..

January 1990 - FATAL ACCIDENT
The southside approach to the Sagamore Bridge is the scene of a serious accident which killed 3 people.

November 28, 1994 - FATAL ACCIDENT
A mother and son were killed in a serious accident on the Bourne Scenic Highway.
