CAPE FIRE / RESCUE BOATS

CAPE COD AREA
FIRE / RESCUE BOATS
Cape Cod is a bent arm shaped peninsula surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean,
Nantucket Sound, Buzzards Bay, and Cape Cod Bay in the southeastern
part of Massachusetts.

To the south of Cape Cod are the islands of
Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.

Numerous fire / rescue departments protect the communities on the
Cape and Islands. Each of these departments have salt water bays
and fresh water ponds that they are responsible for.

There are a few actual "fireboats" in the area, but most of the departments
use boats for rescue purposes.

Boats are listed here by community / department name
beginning with Cape Cod communities, followed by the Islands,
and Plymouth County.

Fighting fires on boats and ships present unique and dangerous conditions.
Sometimes a boat is at dock and within reach of shore apparatus.
When away from the dock, fire on boats and rescue of occupants present
fire departments with some major challenges.
Fire boats are designed to combat these events when they happen.

Newest fire boats have the ability to get to a scene quickly.

Many times, the emergency is a rescue or medical emergency, rather than a fire.

The Hyannis boat is specifically designed to support a dive team operation
with a platform that is low to the water and provides a means of pulling someone
out of the water.

In 2013 the Sandwich Fire Department took delivery of this 37 foot Moose Boat
fireboat with a 2500 gpm capacity. Marine 439 is kept in the water at the Sandwich
Basin at the eastern end of the Cape Cod Canal.  The vessel is capable of responding
to incidents in the Canal, Cape Cod Bay, or Buzzards Bay.

Some boats are designed and built specifically for a department's needs.

In recent years, many departments have acquired "surplus" or used boats from the USCG or
other agencies and modified them to local needs.

COMM FD MARINE 310
COMM FD Acquired this 2007 Safeboat 25' former USCG boat to replace the 1991 Boston Whaler
Guardian Boat 300. The new boat will be in service in 2014. It has twin 225 HP Honda outboards.
