"Challenger"
Long Beach built (2) nearly identical fireboats in 1987.
The "Challenger" and "Liberty" are 88' 6" LOA, 21' beam, 6' draft.
Each can pump approx 10,000 gpm.
The boats were built by Moss Point Marine in Escataupa, Mississippi.
Soon after delivered, both were required to undergo extensive
repairs
to correct some design and construction issues which had quickly lead
to serious corrosion problems.
"Challenger" was retired when replaced by the 2016 vessel "Protector"

"Liberty" will be replaced by a new vessel named "Vigilance" in 2017.

A new fireboat that will replace the 1988 Liberty is under
construction
and expected to be delivered in 2017. The new boat will be named
"Vigilance"
That boat will be identical to the new Long Beach Fireboat 20 "Protector."

40,000 gpm pump with actual capacity closer to 60,000 gpm
The vessel, designed by Robert Allen, is equipped with the
Voith Schneider propulsion system allowing it to move in any
director while controlled from the wheelhouse.

located
at 225 Marina Drive, in Alamitos Bay.
The assigned boat is a 31' 6" Safeway boat
equipped with a 1000 gpm pump.
It has a bow deckgun, small cabin, and large cockpit.

The City of Long Beach Fire Department's Downtown Marina
station is at
the end of Shoreline Drive at the Long Beach Shoreline Marina.
The marina is located across the channel from the Queen Mary.
The boat assigned is a 31' 6" Safeway with a 1000 gpm pump.

The third of the City of Long Beach Fire Department's "rescue
boats" is docked at
Fire Station 20 in Back Channel at 549 Pier D Ave West, Long Beach.
It is kept along with Fireboat 20.
The 31' 6" Safeway boat has a 1000 gpm pump.
The boat was built c. 2008

The Los Angeles County Fire Department Lifeguard Division
provides rescue boat services with approximately 10 "Bay Watch" type boats.
These Rescue Boats are operated out of several ports including Cabrillo,
Redondo Beach, Marina Del Rey, Malibu, along with Isthmus and Avalon on
Catalina Island
The following boats were at the Los Angeles County Beaches and Harbors office
at 13837 Fiji Way at the Marina Del Rey.
Each appears to be equipped with a fire pump and deckgun.

OAKLAND
Oakland Fire

"Sea Wolf"
Oakland has had several fireboats over the years.
Following the 1989 Earthquakes, Oakland committed to
building a new fireboat.
The 1994 "Sea Wolf" was built is Pascagoula, Mississippi
by Sea-Fab, Inc.
The vessel is 60' in length.
It is capable of 8,000 gpm thru 4 turrets.
In 2003, the City defunded the fireboat staffing.
The boat has been maintained, but not actively in service.
Along with Sea Wolf the Oakland FD also operates a
newer Safeboat for quick response.
The "Sea Wolf" and other vessels are off Embarcadero West
at the foot of Clay St.
