BREWSTER FIRE STATION PROJECT Brewster voters approved a $13.5 million new headquarters fire station at the November 2015 town meeting and with a December 2015 ballot election. Ground was broken February 2, 2017 on the new station. Site preparation and construction began soon after. The plan calls for an approximately 22,000 square foot station to be built behind the present fire station at 1657 Main Street. The station will have 5 drive thru double deep bays. The present station will remain in place and be utilized by other town departments. A separate building, known as the annex, which was used to house some apparatus and equipment was torn down to make room for construction. The present station was originally built as a police-fire station in 1974. The police department moved into their own station in 2001. The growing fire department utilized the police department's former space, but soon determined a new facility was necessary. Brewster Fire Department protects the 22.5 square mile town, with a population of about 11,000 residents. In 2016 they responded to 2,917 incidents (about 8 incidents/day average). The department currently has about 18 fulltime and 18 call personnel. Apparatus includes 3 pumping engines, 1 aerial ladder, 1 heavy rescue truck, 2 forestry trucks, 3 ALS ambulances, and several support vehicles and apparatus. The heavy rescue and one of the engines are scheduled to be replaced by a single rescue pumper in late 2017. The new station is expected to be opened in May 2018. The new station was dedicated at a public event on June 23, 2018. A few weeks later, the department moved apparatus into the station and moved out of the old station.
