AIRPORT DISASTER DRILL
About every 3 years, the FAA requires a large scale drill at
the Cape Cod Gateway Airport (formerly Barnstable Municipal Airport)
in Hyannis.

This year's drill was held on Thursday September 26, 2024.
In addition to the CCGA Airport ARFF team and the Hyannis
Fire Department, a number of other agencies actively participated.

The drill includes a simulated aircraft crash and fire, as well
as a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI).

FIREFIGHTING
The initial response by ARFF attacked a fire in several dumpsters.
Other firefighters rotated through the firefighting evolution during
the entire drill.

SEARCH & RESCUE
Another area included forcible entry and search and rescue
with a smoke machine making it difficult to see.

EXTRICATION
Yet another station utilized a number of wrecked vehicles
and extrication requirements.

MCI
Out on the "runway" (East Ramp) crash scene were several aircraft
and heavy trucks.
Dozens of Victims who had previously been moulaged with
various minor to severe injuries were scattered around the area
requiring first arrival crews to declare an MCI, establish ICS,
initiated Triage, and ultimately transfer and trasport victims to
Cape Cod Hospital, which also took advantage of the opportunity
to test their ability to manage a large number of patients.

ASSESSMENT
A number of observers and assessors looked for ways to
improve various aspects of the response and management of
such large scaled incidents.
A new software system was evaluated,
as well as the familiar START triage and radio communications
 systems.

Some of the Departments and Agencies that participated include:
Cape Cod Gateway Airport ARFF
Hyannis Fire Department
Barnstable Fire Department
COMM Fire Department
Yarmouth Fire Department
Harwich Fire Department
Orleans Fire Department
Barnstable Police Department
Medflight
Sheriff Department Communications
NFPA
and others
