ABOUT
|
In 1971 the Barnstable County Forest Fire Service had another brush breaker built. This third generation of County No. 1 replaced the 1957 Ford / Maxim in North Falmouth. The new truck was a 10 wheel all wheel drive International chassis with the bars and body built by the Pierre Thibault Fire Trucks in Quebec, Canada. It was a larger, taller truck than the previous breakers. It carried 1000 gallons of water and had a rear mount pump. Like prior trucks assigned to Falmouth, it too carried ground ladders and other equipment to support structural operations as well as brush fires. The new truck was stationed in North Falmouth in 1971. When the Barnstable County Forest Fire service dissolved around 1982, the Falmouth Fire Department took ownership changing its radio designation from C-15 to Breaker 15. It remained in North Falmouth until about 2003 when an ambulance was first assigned to North Falmouth, taking the bay that brush breakers had occupied since that station first opened in 1953. The truck was moved to the East Falmouth station 5 where it remained active and finally in reserve status until taken out of service in January 2014 after a total of some 43 years of service within Falmouth and Barnstable County.
