The Elizabeth Islands run from the Woods Hole area of Falmouth southwesterly between Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound. The Islands are considered part of Dukes County (Martha's Vineyard).  Cuttyhunk Island is the most distant and most populated of the Elizabeth Islands chain. Naushon Island is the largest of the islands. Fire protection on the islands has always been minimal, but there have been a variety of fire trucks on both islands.

This 1946 Dodge Power Wagon Brush Breaker started out with the Falmouth Fire Department as their Car 30. It ran out of the Main Street, Falmouth Station for most of its years in Falmouth. It had a small pump, approx 100 gpm and about 300 gallons of water. When its service ended in Falmouth, about 1976 when Falmouth bought a new small brush breaker Truck 20, the old Power Wagon was given to Naushon Island that had nothing prior to that.

The 1946 Dodge remained in service on Naushon until about 2010. It was purchased by a private owner in Bourne and completely refurbished about that time.

Gosnold - Cuttyhunk Island - Engine - 1980s (1965) International/Farrar 500/400 Engine

This Cuttyhunk Engine is believed to be about a 1965 International/Farrar engine that likely started out with the Gay Head Fire Department on the Vineyard. Approx 500 gpm front mount pump and perhaps 400 gallon water tank, it carried ladders and pump cans which would have been used on grass and brush fires. It probably came to Cuttyhunk around 1982 or so, when Gay Head got a similar style 1982 Chevy 750 front mount, 400 gallon mini-pumper as Engine 2.

During the 1980s, a retired 1977 Dodge 4x4 Patrol Truck that had served as the DEM Car 3 in the Lower Cape was sent over to Naushon Island where it remained for a number of years.

In about 2008, the DCR assisted Naushon in outfitting a tractor drawn trailer with about a 500 gallon poly water tank and a small pump with some hose to imrpove the overall firefighting capability on the large, sparsely populated island.

In about 2009, the old 1946 Dodge Power Wagon that had protected Naushon Island since about 1976 was replaced. Its replacement was a military surplus 1986 Chevy 4x4 Pickup. It was equipped with a 125 gpm, 100 gallon skid tank from a former DCR District 1 Patrol truck.

In about 2011, another former Gay Head/Aquinnah Fire Department Engine came to Cuttyhunk. The 1982 Chevy 4x4/Continental has a 750 gpm front mount pump and about 400 gallon tank. It has an overhead ladder rack and carries a load of hose. It added significantly to the Cuttyhunk FD and can reach some areas their larger conventional engine may not.
