The Commonwealth of Massachusetts - State Forest Fire Control - known at various times as the Department of Conservation (DOC), Department of Environmental Management (DEM), and the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR, considers the Cape & Islands to be District 1. The District 1 headquarters is at Shawme Crowell Park in Sandwich and Nickerson State Forest is in Brewster. On Martha's Vineyard, there is a 5,300 acre forest known as the Manuel F Correllus Forest. That forest is near the Martha's Vineyard Airport in the Towns of Edgartown and West Tisbury. In 1968, the State bought a 1968 International L1700 4x4/Farrar 250/600 Brush Breaker for District 1. The new breaker was assigned to Martha's Vineyard. At the time, the truck was designated (1-3) and used the radio number "M-63" on the Vineyard Fire Radio. It didn't have a District 1 number assigned and was usually just referred to as the "Vineyard Truck." At the time, the Cape was protected by two larger Brush Breakers. The 1964 FWD/Farrar 1000 gallon Truck 6 (1-4) was at Shawme Crowell and the 1965 FWD/Farrar 1000 gallon Truck 5 (1-5) was in Brewster at Nickerson State Park. Note: District 2 at Myles Standish State Forest in Plymouth/Carver had 2 of the FWD/Farrar 1000 gallon breakers. The 1964 Truck 18 (2-4) and the 1966 Truck 19 (2-5). Sometime around 1988, the 1964 Breaker 6 was transferred to District 3 becoming (3-7). The 1968 International came back to the Cape becoming Truck 6 (1-4). The 1965 FWD Truck 5 from Nickerson was sent to Martha's Vineyard for a couple years as Truck 7 (1-3). Nickerson had only a Patrol truck, but Brewster Fire Department was sharing the building and housing one of the old Barnstable County breakers as Brewster Station 2 at the time. In 1992, District 1 got a new International/EJ Murphy 250/750 gallon Brush Breaker assigned to Shawme Crowell as Breaker 6 (1-4). The 1968 International was reassigned as Breaker 5. Both served at Shawme Crowell for a period of time. In 1998 a new Breaker 6 was built on a 1972 AM General 2.5 ton 6x6 military chassis by T-Tech. It had a 350 gpm pump and carried 750 gallons. The new Breaker 6 stayed at Shawme Crowell and the 1992 International was sent to Martha's Vineyard, being housed and staffed by the West Tisbury Fire Department. The 1965 FWD came back from the Vineyard and went back to Nickerson State Park from about 1998 to 2001. In 2001 that FWD served at Brewster Fire Department station briefly as the acting Breaker 235 until Brewster took delivery of a "new" breaker in 2002. After that service it is believed the 1965 FWD was then retired. In 2005, the West Barnstable Fire Department took delivery of a 1975 Dodge 3500 gallon Tanker that had previously belonged to Lanesborough Fire Department. It filled in for about a year as West Barnstable refubished their 1985 Tanker 296. Once that duty was over, the 1975 tanker became surplus and went to Shawme. After a little work, it was sent over to Martha's Vineyard to serve as Tanker 3 (833) at Correllus Forest where it remained until being disposed of in 2010. In 2007, the 1968 International/Farrar got rehabbed. The rusting water tank was removed and after some body work, a new 350 gpm/650 gallon skid tank and pump was installed into Breaker 5. It remained at Shawme Crowell and served a few more years. In 2010, a mechanical issue put the 1968 International out of service. In 2010, a 1988 International 4x4 chassis with a flatbed body was acquired for District 1. The 350/650 skid tank and pump from the retired 1968 Breaker 5 was installed onto the new chassis. The truck was designated as Forestry 5 (1-5) and was sent to Martha's Vineyard. It is currently still assigned to the Vineyard and may be referred to as F-831 on the Vineyard Fire Radio. In 2008, District 1 had taken delivery of a 2008 Ford F350/Pro-Tech 250/250/20A Forestry Truck. It was assigned as (1-3) and 830 on Martha's Vineyard. It served as a Forestry truck on the Vineyard until 2012, when it was transferred to District 3 in exchange for a smaller 2008 Ford F350 110/200 Forestry Patrol truck that also currently serves Martha's Vineyard. The 1998 V-Tec Brush Breaker remained in West Tisbury until about 2013 when West Tisbury took delivery of a new 2013 International/V-Tec 300/750 Brush Breaker 731. The 1998 (former B6) truck came back to Shawme and in 2014 was transferred to District 2 at Myles Standish becoming Breaker 18 (2-5) and joining the nearly identical 1998 (1975) AM General/V-Tec Breaker 19 (2-5). So in 2014, the last of the 1964 era FWD breakers retired. |

District 1 operated two identical brush breakers. Truck 6 (1-4) was a 1964 FWD 6x6/Farrar with a 250 gpm pump and 1000 gallon tank. It served at Shawme Crowell State Park in Sandwich for must of its career. The 1965 FWD 6x6/Farrar 250/1000 Truck 5 (1-5) was assigned to Nickerson State Park in Brewster. Sometime around 1988, the 1964 Truck 6 was transferred to District 3 as Truck 3-7. The 1968 International (1-3) was brought back to the Cape from Martha's Vineyard and became Truck 6 (1-4) at Shawme. It is believed, the 1965 FWD Truck 5 was then sent to Martha's Vineyard serving as Truck 7 (1-3) at Manuel Correllus State Forest for a number of years (approx 1988-1998). It then came back to Nickerson State Park Brewster for a couple years. It finished out service in 2001 at the Brewster Fire Department briefly. |
