1939 FORD THE FIRST COUNTY BRUSH BREAKER
NO.1 C-15 |
In 1939 Barnstable County built
its first Brush Breaker. This truck had a 1939 Ford COE
10 wheel chassis with an 85 HP flathead Ford motor and
Marmon Harrington all wheel drive transmission. With a
body built by Robinson Boiler Company in Cambridge, MA, the
truck had a 10000 gallon water tank and 125 gpm pump.
It was capable of about 30-40 mph over the road.
When brand new the truck was housed in the new Cotuit
Fire Station built in 1937. In 1942, when Barnstable
County built a second brush breaker, the 1939 truck was
reassigned to the Falmouth fire headquarters where it
remained until 1953 when it was transferred to the brand new
North Falmouth Fire Station built in 1953. In 1957 when this
truck was replaced by a 1957 Ford / Maxim brush breaker, the
1939 Ford spent about a year in West Barnstable and then in
1958 became Gay Head's first brush breaker on Martha's
Vineyard. |

When the new North Falmouth
Fire Station 3 opened in 1953, the Falmouth FD put a brand
new 1953 Diamond T / Robinson Boiler 750 gpm pumper in
service as Engine 3. It had a 1000 gallon tank and a 125 gpm
second pump allowing it to pump and roll also. Along
with the new engine, the 1939 Ford / Robinson brush breaker
N0.1 was assigned to North Falmouth. |

1942 THE SECOND COUNTY BRUSH BREAKER NO.2
C-14 |
In 1942 Barnstable County built
another brush breaker. The second breaker was on a
1942 Ford COE with a distinctively different looking
radiator grill from the previous 1939 breaker. Other than
the grill design, the rest of the truck built again by
Robinson Boiler in Cambridge looks very much like No.1.
It too carried 1000 gallons and had the rounded front push
bar design. The 1942 truck was
initially assigned to the Cotuit Fire Station. When it
went in service, the 1939 that had been in Cotuit was
reassigned to Falmouth. The truck remained in Cotuit until
about 1949, when it was reassigned to the newly established
West Barnstable Fire District (1949). A 1947 Dodge
power wagon brush breaker that had been built by the Town of
Barnstable and housed in Atwood's Garage in West Barnstable
since 1947 was then reassigned to the Cotuit Fire Station.
The 1942 breaker No.2 remained in West Barnstable until
about 1957-58 when it was replaced by a new 1958 Maxim brush
breaker No.2. That was not the end of the 1942 however, as
it would go on to have a whole new career in Mashpee, where
it became their first brush breaker and became known as
"Geronimo" and served until 1977. |

Barnstable County built a third
brush breaker in 1949. The Ford COE chassis was built
by Robinson Boiler and had a distinctly different look from
No. 1 and No. 2. This truck was shorter with 6 wheels rather
than 10. It also carried 800 gallons rather than 1000.
This truck was assigned to the Dennis Fire Department.

|
1951 FORD COUNTY BRUSH BREAKER No. 3 |
The fourth and last of the
first generation of the Barnstable County brush breakers was
the 1951 Ford / Robinson Boiler No. 3. The truck is
shown at a delivery demonstration for the County
Commissioners at the County Complex in Barnstable village.
This truck was then assigned to the Orleans Fire Station.
It was the smallest of the breakers with only 600 gallons of
water on a 6 wheel chassis. The truck had only rear
wheel drive rather than all wheel drive like the other
breakers.
This 1951 Ford would serve in
Orleans until 1963 when a new 1963 Maxim brush breaker C-13
went in service. It is not clear what happened to the
1951 truck when it was replaced. |

built the first of the second generation brush breakers. The
1957 Ford / Maxim 800 gallon brush breaker replaced the 1939
first generation County brush breaker No. 1. It was
assigned to the North Falmouth Fire Station 3. This was the
first of several Maxim brush breakers purchased by
Barnstable County. The 10 wheel, all wheel drive
breaker had a 250 gpm pump and a cowling behind the cab for
protection of personnel. This truck would serve from
North Falmouth until replaced in 1971 by a new International
/ Thibault brush breaker. The 1957 finished out its
career with the Eastham Fire Department. |

1971 INTERNATIONAL/THIBAULT COUNTY BRUSH
BREAKER NO.1 C-15 |
In 1971 the Barnstable County
Forest Fire Service had another brush breaker built.
This third generation of County No. 1 replaced the 1957 Ford
/ Maxim in North Falmouth. The new truck was a 10 wheel all
wheel drive International chassis with the bars and body
built by the Pierre Thibault Fire Trucks in Quebec, Canada.
It was a larger, taller truck than the previous breakers. It
carried 1000 gallons of water and had a rear mount pump.
Like prior trucks assigned to Falmouth, it too carried
ground ladders and other equipment to support structural
operations as well as brush fires.
The new truck was stationed in North Falmouth in 1971. When
the Barnstable County Forest Fire service dissolved around
1982, the Falmouth Fire Department took ownership changing
its radio designation from C-15 to Breaker 15. It remained
in North Falmouth until about 2003 when an ambulance was
first assigned to North Falmouth, taking the bay that brush
breakers had occupied since that station first opened in
1953. The truck was moved to the East Falmouth station 5
where it remained active and finally in reserve status until
taken out of service in January 2014 after a total of some
43 years of service within Falmouth and Barnstable County. |

1967 INTERNATIONAL/1982 TED YOUNG COUNTY
BRUSH BREAKER NO.2 B-295 |
In the waning days of the
Barnstable County Forest Fire Service a 1967 International
military 5 ton chassis was acquired and a new brush breaker
was built by Ted Young. It had a 1000 gallon tank and
rear mounted pump. The truck was built to replace the 1958
Maxim No. 2 C-14 brush breaker that had been assigned to
West Barnstable since delivered.
The new breaker however never
carried Barnstable County identification and was painted up
as West Barnstable Breaker 295, including the community
pride of "Shark City" on one side and "Finn Town" on the
other. It is shown here in front of the Chicken Coop where
it and several other apparatus were housed before the new
West Barnstable Fire Station was built in 1988.
This truck had a gasoline motor
and standard transmission. It was taken out of service to be
refurbished in about 2013 with a diesel, automatic
transmission, and general upgrade which has not yet been
completed as of 2016. |

West Barnstable Breaker 295 was
originally planned to be a Barnstable County Forest Fire
Service brush breaker, but about the time work began on the
truck, the County ended its fire service and West Barnstable
Fire Department got the new and final truck planned by
Barnstable County.
