FALMOUTH
"FIREFIGHTER MAYDAY"
3 ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE
22 RIVER'S EDGE RD.
Sunday  December 17, 2023   Approx 13:35 Hrs

POST INCIDENT REPORT

FALMOUTH "MAYDAY"
The Falmouth Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire
at 22 River's Edge Road, in Waquoit on Sunday December 17, 2023
at 13:35 hrs. Smoke was showing from the 2 story unoccupied
house on arrival and crews deployed a handline to the front door.

The Lieutenant of Engine 25, and 2 firefighters made entry into
heavy smoke conditions. While only about 4 - 5 feet into the house,
the Lieutenant fell head first into a hole burned through the floor.
He was able to call a "MAYDAY" for himself, injured severely
in the basement. A Second Alarm was immediately transmitted
as all hands went to work to rescue the Lieutenant.

He was quickly located and removed from the building.
Due to his injuries, a MedFlight was requested and he was
flown to a trauma center in Boston where he remained
hospitalized for nearly 2 weeks.

A Third Alarm was transmitted bringing additional help to
the scene as heavy fire conditions and a more defensive
attack brought the fire under control in about 2 hours.

Firefighters train for all types of emergencies, including
"Mayday" situations. That training paid off as crews
reacted immediately, and successfully rescued their
injured Brother Firefighter.

Falmouth Firefighters who battled the 3rd Alarm,
just the week before, also worked Christmas Day.
