RETIRED MEMBERS PASSED AWAY WITHIN HOURS OF EACH OTHER
COMM FD mourns the loss of two retired members who worked
together for many years
and passed away within hours of each other.
CAPTAIN MILES J. "MAC" PAWLOSKI
Age 87, passed away September 16, 2023
FIREFIGHTER GARY JOHNSON
Age 70, passed away September 17, 2023
CAPTAIN MILES J. "MAC" PAWLOSKI
Captain Mac Pawlowski became a call firefighter with the
Centerville-Osterville Fire Department
around 1961. He was a member of the Osterville Station roster, where he served
as a Call Captain.
In 1973 he was hired as one of the first few Fulltime
Firefighters.
He became the first Fire Prevention Officer and established fire prevention
standards.
He was a Charter Member of Centerville-Osterville Firefighters Local 2346, IAFF,
in 1974 and served in various leadership roles.
In 1980, when the C-O FD first provided fulltime staffing 7 days a week (with 2
groups),
he became the Captain of Group 2.
In 1981, C-O FD went to 24 hour staffing (3 groups) and Captain Pawloski
continued to lead
Group 2 for many years, eventually with (4 groups).
Mac was a retired US Army vet. A husband, father, and
grandfather.
He enjoyed baseball and followed many Cape Cod Baseball players who made it to
the Bigs.
A master card player and strategist, who could see and think many steps ahead,
which served him well as an officer and incident commander.
I had the honor of working with and for him for many of my
years at COMM FD.
He retired in April 1997, after 24 years fulltime, and about 36 fire service
years.
Mac enjoyed many years of retirement, enjoying winters in
Florida
and attending Spring Training games. When on the Cape, he continued
to visit the fire station and keep in touch with the guys.
He was loved and respected by everyone who knew him.
He passed away on September 16, 2023
Age 87
FIREFIGHTER GARY JOHNSON
Firefighter Gary Johnson began his fire service career with the Otis Fire
Department.
In 1989, he was hired by the COMM Fire Department as a Firefighter/EMT.
A husband, father, and grandfather.
US Air Force vet.
Gary was a dedicated member of the department and often showed
up
when others didn't, providing station coverage in the middle of the night
for years. A professional, who knew his job well and got things done.
He served within the Union Local 2346 and was involved in many
of the extra activities at the fire department.
A great sense of humor and laugh.
Gary retired in 2015 after 25 years with COMM FD and about 28
years
in the fire service.
After retiring, Gary and his wife moved south for a number of
years
but continued to keep in touch with everyone back home.
In 2023 he battled cancer.
He passed away on September 17, 2023.
Just hours after his favorite Captain.
Age 70
He will be buried at the National Cemetery in Bourne.
