Edgartown - 1930 Ford Model AA / Barton 350/200 Forestry
(Edgartown FD collection)

The Edgartown Forest Fire Department operated this 1930 Ford Model AA truck. It apparently had a Barton 350 gpm pump front mounted and carried about 200 gallons of water. It would have had some hose and tools. The truck was probably the first fire truck to serve on Chappaquiddick Island when it was assigned there in 1950.

Edgartown Engine 2 was a 1956 Ford F800 4x4 / Maynard Brush Breaker. Like other trucks of that era, it also served as an engine with a 750 gpm front mount pump and carried a healthy 800 gallons of water making it quite useful for any type of fires at the time. It carried about 1200' of 2-1/2" hose, 400' of 1-1/2" hose, 400' of 2/3" hose on 2 reels, a 16' and 35' ladder, and other essential equipment. The truck cost about $11,900 in 1956 and was built by Maynard in Marshfield, Mass.

It also had a 250 gpm auxiliary pump driven by a second motor that enabled pump and roll capability for off road brush fires as a brush breaker.

It served from 1956 to approximately 1977.

Edgartown built a small fire station on Chappaquiddick Island around 1983. The island lacks fire hydrants and back in the 1990's an old fuel truck was used as a water tanker. It was about a 1974 Dodge that had a small pump and carried about 2000 gallons of water.

Edgartown put this 2013 International/KME Tanker in service on Chappaquiddick Island. The new truck has a 1250 gpm pump and 2000 gallon tank. It has a folding tank and other equipment. From time to time the truck has been reassigned to the main station to give it some more running time and mileage.

Edgartown put this 2020 Ford F550 4x4 / Bulldog 250 gpm, 300 gallon Forestry truck in service. It has larger wheels and is more capable than the previous forestry trucks. The truck can be taken on a variety of calls and is better able to access narrow driveways and off road situations.
