Various state agencies were responsible for these services over the years. The Department of Conservation (DOC) The Department of Environmental Management (DEM) The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). The State defines its Forest
Fire Control Districts essentially by Counties. District 3 includes Bristol County Forest Fire Apparatus Fire Towers

There were plenty of fires before there were motor vehicles. This horse drawn wagon is labeled "Mass State Forester." It is unknown if, or where, it may have served in District 1. It is however likely that it represents the equipment that would have been around for firefighting in the late 1800s and early 1900s, prior to the arrival of motor vehicles. The wagon is loaded with about a dozen "soda-acid" water fire extinguishers. These metal (typically copper) fire extinguishers would carry about 2-1/2 to 3 gallons of water (weighing about 20 to 25 lbs) and would have some soda (bicarbonate) dissolved in the water. When needed, tipping the can, thereby adding a small amount of (Sulphuric) acid to the water, would cause a chemical reaction that would create the pressure (like opening a recently shaken bottle of soda or beer) within the extinguisher needed to discharge a stream of water onto the fire. A wagon carrying a supply of extra soda and acid chemicals could recharge extinguishers that were refilled with water in any remote location. Used with brooms, shovels, and rakes, the extinguishers could contain and extinguish many smaller fires. Use of "chemical" fire engines in the late 1800s and early 1900s was quite popular because it did not require the power of steam or a motor to create the pressure needed to spray water on a fire. One of the keys to preventing large fires is to locate and extinguish them when they are still small. The State Department of Conservation operated Forest Fire Patrol Trucks in many areas, including on Cape Cod. One of the earliest motor vehicle patrol trucks was a 1922 Ford Model T that was located in the Lower Cape (Brewster area). The first State Patrolman on the Cape was Henry Perry who drove several patrol trucks and fought many fires from the early 1920s to the 1950s. His truck appears to carry a number of extinguishers and would have had a variety of tools as well. |

Early forestry firefighting apparatus in many cases preceded organized fire departments in some communities. The State organized its Department of Conservation Forest Fire Control Department sometime around 1911 and placed a variety of primitive apparatus around the state. It is unknown if this truck was assigned to, or is operating on Cape Cod, but it probably would have in the early 1920s and 1930s. Equipped with a pump, it could draft water from a pond or other body of water, and supply hose lines used to extinguish fires. |

This 1935 Ford fire truck says "Shawme Forest" (Sandwich) on its doors and "Forest Fire Patrol" over the windshield. The truck is equipped with some steel bars and basic protection, making it one of the earliest apparatus, if not the first, that could be defined as a "Brush Breaker" on Cape Cod. It was equipped with a small 75 gpm pump and about 400 gallons of water. Based on its lettering, it is believed this truck may have initially been a State truck. It later photos, it can be found lettered and operated by the Sandwich Volunteer Fire Department.

In about 1939, Massachusetts had a significant number of forestry fire trucks built for the Department of Conservation (DOC). Some of the first fire trucks equipped with two way radios, these trucks carried a large amount of hose, approx 2000', extinguishers, and tools, with about a 100 gpm pump and 280 gallons of water. At least two of these were assigned to Cape Cod. One in the Upper Cape, based at Shawme Crowell State Forest, although stationed at and operated by the Bourne Fire Department at times. This truck likely served until the early to mid 1960s. |

The second State Forestry Truck on the Cape was a 1941 Ford COE of similar style, with a slightly different radiator grill style. These trucks had small 100 gpm pumps and carried about 280 gallons of water in their tanks. It was assigned to the Lower Cape operating at the Nickerson State Park in Brewster. It would have served at Nickerson from about 1941 to 1965. After its fire service, it remained at Nickerson serving as a utility vehicle. |

Starting in 1964, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management (DEM) designed and built (4) identical Brush Breakers. The 6x6 FWD chassis Brush Breakers were built in Marshfield, Mass. by Farrar. They had 250 gpm pumps and carried 1000 gallons of water. One of the first two trucks was State Truck 1-4, known as Car 6 on Barnstable County Fire Radio. It was assigned to Shawme Crowell State Forest in Sandwich. This truck served from 1964 until about 1988, when it is believed to have been reassigned to District 3 in Freetown, operating as Breaker 3-7 for some years. |

The third of the State DEM Brush Breakers was built in 1965. The 6x6 FWD/Farrar 250 gpm, 1000 gallon Brush Breaker was State 1-5, and known as Truck 5 on the radio. It was initially assigned to the Nickerson State Park in Brewster, but did plenty of duty elsewhere. It is believed this truck was sent to Martha's Vineyard from 1988 to about 1998. It then went back to Nickerson in Brewster for a year or two, and ultimately finished out serving as the Brewster Fire Department's Breaker 235 from 2001-2002. The 1968 International/Farrar 250 gpm, 600 gallon Breaker, that had been on the Vineyard, came back to Shawme as Breaker 6 in 1988, when the 1964 FWD Breaker 6 went to District 3. The two other FWD/Farrar Breakers, the 1964 State 2-4 (Truck 18) and 1966 State 2-5 (Truck 19) bother served District 2 at Myles Standish State Forest in the Plymouth/Carver area. |

In 1968, the State DEM built another Brush Breaker. It was a 1968 International/Farrar 4x4 truck with a gas engine and manual transmission. It had a 250 gpm pump and carried 600 gallons of water. The truck was designed for operating on Martha's Vineyard and was assigned to protect the Manuel F. Correllus State Forest on the Island. It was designated State Truck 1-3, but did not initially have a Barnstable County radio ID. It went by "M-63" on the Vineyard radio, but was simply known as the "Vineyard Truck" at District 1 HQ at Shawme. In about 1988, when the 1964 FWD/Farrar Truck 6 at Shawme was reassigned to Freetown State Forest in District 3, the 1968 International/Farrar came off the Island and became Truck 6 at Shawme Crowell. The 1965 FWD/Farrar Truck 5 from Nickerson was reassigned to the Vineyard, leaving only a State Patrol truck at Nickerson Park in Brewster. The Brewster Fire Department had acquired the 1963 Maxim former Barnstable County Breaker No.4 (C12) from Dennis in about 1982, protecting the Lower Cape. Brewster later added the 1960 Maxim former County No.3 (C-13) from Orleans/Eastham in about 1988 for a few years. In 1992, the State built a new Brush Breaker for District 1. Truck 1-4, was known as Truck 6 on the radio. It was a 1992 International/EJ Murphy 4x4 250/750 that served at Shawme Crowell. The 1968 International was renumbered from Truck 6 to Truck 5. It continued to serve at Shawme. The 1968 Breaker was refurbished in 2007, getting a new poly 300/650 skid tank and pump. Unfortunately, mechanical problems put the truck out of service finally in 2010 after about 42 years of service. |

In 1992, the State DCR bought a new brush breaker for District 1. The 1992 International 4x4 breaker was built by EJ Murphy. It came with a 250 gpm pump and 750 gallon tank. The truck was assigned as the District 1, Truck 4, or 1-4. It was assigned as Breaker 6 on the radio. The truck was stationed at the Shawme Crowell headquarters from 1992-1998. It was eventually reassigned as State 1-6 and Breaker 6 on the radio. In 1998, the truck was sent to Martha's Vineyard. It is believed that it replaced the 1965 FWD that had been at Manual F Corrullus Forest since about 1988. The 1965 FWD went back to Nickerson in Brewster briefly, while the 1992 International went to the recently expanded West Tisbury Station 2 on Edgartown Road. It was staffed by the West Tisbury FD and called Breaker 731 on the Vineyard radio. In about June 2007, the 1992 truck came back to Shawme Crowell where it continues to serve as Breaker 6. District 1 moved the 1998 (1972) AM General/V-Tec Breaker 6 to the Vineyard in 2007, where it operated with the West Tisbury FD until 2013 when it came back to the Cape and then was transferred to District 2. |

In 1998, District 1 took delivery of a newly built Brush Breaker. It was built on a 1972 AM General 6x6 former military chassis. V-Tec in Vermont built the truck with a 350 gpm pump and 750 gallon tank. It also was equipped with about 15 gallons of Class a foam. The new truck was assigned to Shawme Crowell as Breaker 6 (1-6), taking the place of the 1992 International that was then sent to the Vineyard. In about 2007, this truck was sent to the Vineyard and swapped with the 1992 Breaker that returned to the Cape. The 1998 was assigned to the West Tisbury FD and operated as Breaker 731 on the Vineyard radio. In about 2013, West Tisbury placed a new Breaker in service and no longer had the room or need to house the State breaker. The 1998 Breaker returned to Shawme Crowell and in 2014 was transferred to District 2 where it would become and continues to serve as State Breaker 18 (2-4) at Myles Standish. |

Historically, State District 1 never operated a tanker. In 2007 it built a new Tanker (Tender) on a 1991 International former military fuel truck. It became a 1200 gallon tanker with a small auxiliary pump. The truck became Tender 7 (1-7) assigned to Shawme Crowell. |

This truck was put in service in 2007 to replace the 1986 Chevy Patrol 4 (1-2). The 1999 Chevy 4x4 flatbed came with 259 gpm pump, 250 gallon tank, and 20 gals of Class A foam. In 2008, DCR District 1 put a 2008 Ford F350 4x4/Pro-Tech in service as a Patrol Truck. It had a 250 gpm pump, 250 gallon tank, and 20 gallons of Class A foam. The truck was assigned to Martha's Vineyard. It served on the Vineyard 2008 until about 2012. In 2012 it was traded to District 3 for a 2008 Ford F350 more conventional pickup style Patrol Truck. |

The 2010 Forestry 5 (1-5) was built on a 2003 International flatbed chassis. The 2007 250/650 poly skid unit that was originally put on the 1968 International/Farrar Breaker 5 when rehabbed in 2007. When that truck went out of service with mechanical issues, the skid unit was placed on the 2003 International. Forestry 5 was then moved to Martha's Vineyard using the "831" designation on the Vineyard network. |

In 2012, District 1 traded its 2008 Ford F-350/Pro-Tech 250/250/20 Forestry Truck (1-3) to District 3. In return, District 1 got the District 3 Patrol Truck 3-1. This 2008 Ford F350 4x4 traditional style pickup included the 110/200 Skid tank and pump. This truck became State 1-3, Forestry 3 on Barnstable County, and "Forestry 830" on the Vineyard radio. It has been housed at the Manual F Corrullus State Forest fire barn since 2012. |

The 1939 Ford COE 100/280 Forestry Truck assigned to Shawme Crowell was housed and staffed by the Bourne Fire Department at some point (second from left) shown in front of the Buzzards Bay Fire Station along with some of Bourne's apparatus.

The 1939 State Truck visited Mashpee in the mid 1940s. Future Mashpee Fire Chief (c.1950) Pete Peters and young son Gordon Peters.
In the 1990s, one of the old 1939 Fords was found and brought back to Shawme Crowell with the hopes of refurbishing it. The truck was never fixed up and its ultimate status is unknown.

The DOC Forestry Truck at Nickerson State Forest was a 1941, with a slightly different front radiator grill. That truck served from about 1941 to 1965. It then went on to serve as a utility truck at the park for a period of time.

The 1957 Ford State Patrol on right and Town of Barnstable 1958 Ford Patrol Trucks at the Cape Cod Airport in Marstons Mills with the Barnstable County Fire Patrol Plane P-18 and two fire chief vehicles.
The State Patrol truck with the Forest Fire Danger sign on the back. Since the State truck was also assigned to District 1 it says Barnstable County across the rear of the roof. Not to be confused as a Barnstable County Forest Fire Service vehicle, since the County did not operate patrol trucks.

when the new District 1 Breaker 6 arrived. It remained at Shawme
Crowell.

skid unit was placed in the truck to replace the original rusty

In 2007, the State Breaker was sent to Martha's Vineyard. It replaced the 1992 International, that returned to District 1 Shawme Crowell as Breaker 6. The truck on the Vineyard was stationed in West Tisbury and went by Breaker 731. The truck served on the Vineyard from 2007 to 2013.
