| The Monument Beach Fire Station 2 was an old 1800s barn that was converted to a fire station. One of the early apparatus was a 1930 Ford Model A fire truck Engine 2. It was probably locally built and primarily for forestry duty with hose reels and a modest water tank. It is shown here next to the 1939 Buffalo Engine 3. |

The Town of Bourne Fire Department officially organized around 1925. Much of the town has been in forest covered land. Over the years, many large brush and forest fires have been fought in Bourne. Bourne has had a large variety of forest firefighting apparatus over time. Some of the early apparatus included Forest Fire Patrol trucks. In about 1939, Massachusetts had a significant number of forestry fire trucks built for the Department of Conservation (DOC). Some of the first fire trucks equipped with two way radios, these trucks carried a large amount of hose, approx 2000', extinguishers, and tools, with about a 100 gpm pump and 280 gallons of water. At least two of these were assigned to Cape Cod. One in the Upper Cape, based at Shawme Crowell State Forest, although stationed at and operated by the Bourne Fire Department at times. This truck likely served until the early to mid 1960s. Shown assigned to Bourne Station 4 in Pocasset next to the 1934 Bourne Buffalo 600 gpm Engine 5. |

One of the oldest Bourne brush breakers is believed to be this 1941 Military Scout car. It was apparently originally a half track type vehicle. Shown here overlooking the Cape Cod Canal and one of the 1935 Canal bridges. The truck would have carried a couple hundred gallons of water, had some basic steel bars, a hose feel and supply of forestry hose. It is a little confusing whether the truck was known as "11" or if it was actually "2", since it was unlikely Bourne had 11 units at that time. |

This 1944 Chevy Military 4x4 Brush Breaker served Bourne for many years. It had a front mount pump, perhaps 500 gpm, and a rear pump & roll 250 gpm pump. The truck had about a 600 gallon water tank. This truck spent most of its career in the Monument Beach Station 2. It was known as Engine 7 or Car 127. This truck carried more water than engines at the time, and was often taken first due to even structure fires to make a booster tank attack while engines found a water supply. One of the interesting things about this truck is where it came from. In the mid to late 1930s, the State bought a large area of land in the upper Cape (Bourne, Sandwich, Falmouth, and Mashpee) to form the Massachusetts Military Reservation. It was designated Camp Edwards. The early development of the Camp was protected by a private fire brigade. There is information that that brigade or the formal Camp Edwards Fire Department when it was organized around 1941 with WWII, built and used at least one brush breaker. A documentary film of a large 1946 forest fire shows a truck that looks just like this truck while painted military green driving through the woods with a bunch of people on it. It is likely this truck was then sold to Bourne sometime around 1944 or after. It served in Bourne into the 1980s. |

Bourne operated this Brush Breaker as Engine 9. It is about a 1943 Chevy Military former Class 110 Crash Truck. It would have had about a 100 gpm PTO pump and about 250 gallons of water. It is unknown if it came out of Otis or from somewhere else, but its bars are similar to the truck that came from Camp Edwards/Otis. It is likely a pump & roll pump was added as well as a basket of forestry hose. This truck served from Buzzards Bay for many years and would also respond as a primary attack truck at times. The truck came to Bourne around 1949 and served into the 1980s. |

This is believed to be the first, and perhaps only "new" Brush Breaker built for Bourne. It wasn't all wheel drive, but was on a new commercial chassis. It carried about 500 gallons and had a rear pump and roll pump. The truck served until about 1970. |

Little is known about this truck. It is believed to be a 1970 Dodge Power Wagon Brush Breaker that served as Bourne Breaker 8 (128). It burned during a 1975 forest fire near Clay Pond Road in Bourne. It likely had replaced the 1949 Ford Breaker 8. Its replacement would be one of the largest breakers to serve Bourne. |

After the 1970 Dodge Power Wagon Breaker 8 burned, Bourne built one of the largest breakers to serve in Bourne. The 5 ton, 1967 Kaiser Military 6x6 chassis was built by Ted Young. It had a 500 gpm pump and 1500 gallon tank. The large truck responded to many fires over the years serving until about 2006. |

In about 1977, Otis built two new brush breakers. Those replaced 2 older 1950s brush breakers built around 1959-1960 (President Kennedy days). One of them, built on a 1953 chassis (Truck 19) was picked up by Bourne in 1977. It went on to serve as Bourne Breaker 10 (130) in Bourne for a number of years. |

Bourne used this 1960s era Military 4x4 Jeep as a forestry truck from about 1979 into the 1980s. It had a 125 gallon tank and 200 gpm pump. While officially known as "A-2" or "136" it was also known as "Tinker Bell" for some reason. See front of hood. |

In the early 1980s, the 1944 Chevy Breaker 7 (127) retired. In 1986, a 1952 Reo 2.5 ton 6x6 former military chassis was used to build a new brush breaker for the Monument Beach Station 2. It was designated Breaker 9, County "129" with a 250 gpm pump and 600 gallon water tank. It served for a number of years until about 2001 when it got a newer chassis. |

In 2011, Bourne took delivery of a new Breaker 128. The truck had been build by the Brewster Fire Department in 2002. It is a 1959/71 Kaiser 5 ton 6x6 Military chassis. Greenwood put a 1100 gallon tank and 250 pump on it with some steel bars. The truck was not built as a traditional breaker with a place for a crew to ride, but more as a stationary forestry/tanker type vehicle. When in service, Bourne housed

In 2019, Bourne replaced the standard transmission 1959/1971 Kaiser Military 6x6 chassis that was originally used by Brewster to build the Brush Breaker that became Bourne Breaker 128 in 2011. A newer 1990 Military 6x6 chassis with an automatic transmission was used to keep the tanker body built by Greenwood in 2002, while not replacing the bars that made it look like a brush breaker. The tanker stayed in the Monument Beach station. |

This truck spent most of its career in the Monument Beach Station 2. It was known as Engine 7 or Car 127. This truck carried more water than engines at the time, and was often taken first due to even structure fires to make a booster tank attack while engines found a water supply. The design and unique look of this truck leads one to believe that it is the same truck shown in the DCR Film about the 1946 Cape Forest Fire. In the film, it is clear that the brush breaker has the green military paint and the large "1" in a white diamond that prove it being a Camp Edwards/Otis truck at the time. The bars are the same as the Bourne Breaker, particularly with the slight angle change about mid-way along the straight side rail. When exactly the truck came to Bourne is unclear, if it was still with Camp Edwards in 1946, however it is more than likely the same truck.
Camp Edwards brush breaker looks like the same truck that later became Bourne E7.

Around 1977, Bourne acquired a former Otis Brush Breaker to boost
the Bourne fleet. The 1953 Reo former Military chassis was used on
the base from about 1959-60 until replaced around 1976 as Truck 19.
Bourne designated it Breaker 10 and 130 on County. It had about 250
gpm pump and 1000 gallons of water. It served into the 1980s.
The 1953 Reo Truck 19 served as an Otis Brush Breaker from around 1959-60 until replaced in 1976. It battled many fires on the base including the 1965 forest fire that crossed Route 6. This truck went on to serve in Bourne as Breaker 10 and 130 through the 1980s.
