GLOBAL WARMING?  'Experts' agree....

This doesn't have much to do with the fire service per se, it's just one of those things to think about.

It seems like for years "experts" and 'environmentalists' have been making a big fuss about "Global Warming."  Personally I don't know if the world is or isn't really getting warmer.  I know that last winter, it seemed particularly colder (I worked during the blizzards and have first hand knowledge!).  And, I noticed that this summer, it has been particularly warmer.  I guess this is a good cycle, since that is the way it seems to have been forever! In fact, the whole seasonal thing is part of what makes where I live so special.  We have beautiful falls, with crisp nights and warm days, where the vivid colors of leaves, in the process of dying, create some of the most spectacular and picturesque scenes anywhere.  Then we have winter, with its grays and whites, and the cold winds that whistle through the bare trees.  Last winter seemed particularly 'winter like' with deep snow and thick ice that seemed to last forever.  My favorite is spring, when things come back to life,  the grass greens up again, flowers of all colors begin to take over, and once again we can feel the warmth of the sun.  Summers can vary, but this year we have certainly had lots of sunshine, little rain, and great warm days.  As fall again approaches, and another cycle nears completion, its time to once again, prepare for cooler times. Nature has created these phases by an amazing cycle of the world tilting towards and away from the sun on a regular schedule as we orbit the sun.  Imagine what our world might have been like if it was, say always hot at the top of the world and always cold at the bottom.  Where would we go for vacations?

Anyway, some experts have been claiming that we (people, mostly living in the USA), have been causing the world to warm up 'unnaturally' by such things as driving cars that get less gas mileage than others.  Apparently things like that, and other human behaviors (like breathing, farting, and who knows what else) are causing CO2 to create some kinda shield or something that acts like a greenhouse and keeps us warmer than we should be....  o..k....  These are some of the same people complaining that we have been cutting down too many trees... you know, the ones that like CO2 (their fuel) and turn it into oxygen (their excrement) ... the stuff we humans like to breathe.... hmmm. So, too much CO2 is bad, even though we give it off when we breathe and trees like it and create more oxygen from it?  Whatever...

I got to thinking about the Cape.  Cape Cod, for those who don't know, was formed by the deposits made by a receding glacier (big, big chunk of ice caused by real cold temperatures over many, many years), long, long ago (experts could probably tell you exactly what year that was - but I know it was probably before people were created from monkeys or dolphins or....uh huh...).  So this big glacier covered the whole area for a long time (way before SUVs with all wheel drive).  Then, apparently due to a buildup of CO2 (perhaps too many people breathing or something) this big glacier began to melt.   It must have taken years, so you can just imagine the panic that must have been going on (imagine the headlines... GLACIER MELTING!  WE ARE ALL GONNA DIE!  Water Levels expected to reach all time heights!  Global Warming blamed on arrival of Human Beings!  Experts say loss of ice cap will ruin economy!  CNN could have had a field day blaming Americans for the loss of world ice....UN Demands US pay other nations for loss of ice... jeeze...Congress could have passed laws forbidding any more ice melting...perhaps a tax penalty (investment) for not being cool enough...And what about the class action suits, by well intentioned cavemen lawyers, wanting appropriate compensation for their cave clients for the damages caused by all that melting ice....)

So, it all seemed to work out ok.  The ice melted.  It left behind some of the most beautiful landscapes anywhere.  And humans took over, breathing in and out, to further warm the planet and be able to drive their cars on roads not always covered by snow and ice, thereby reducing accidents and use of road salt... another concern of experts...

Where is he going with all this you might ask?  As a paramedic, I learned not to 'diagnose' an EKG by looking at a single heart beat.  You can tell a lot by looking at one or two complexes, but imagine making life changing decisions (or historical references) based on a six second strip, rather than considering sixty or seventy years of heart beats.  Absurd right?  Arrogant at the least.  Probably completely inaccurate.  When 'experts' claim we are all in big trouble because a little glacier ice melted this year or temperatures are up over the past 10 or even 100 years, are they looking at too small a sample of time?  Is it not logical that the Earth may have warm and cold cycles naturally that last decades or even centuries as they have since the beginning of time?  Is it not logical that since we had several 'ice ages' (a great movie by the way) followed by several periods of global warming in the history of the world (ie: before we even got here) that we (people) may not really be the cause of the problem.  Or, that perhaps its not even a problem at all?  Perhaps the Creator made it that way for a reason.  Just like seasons.  Just like the human heart beat.  Just like the life of a tree.  Just like everything.

By the way, how did 'they' record changes in temperature before humans invented ways of measuring changes and ways of documenting these changes?  If we have only been able to do that for say 200 or even 2000 years, out of billions of years, is our sample valid?  Oh yeah, they use sophisticated scientific devices and methods (designed by other 'experts') to make the assumptions (remember the ass outta you and me thing) about the past.  Or something like that...

I don't worry about global warming, but I do worry about 'experts' and others that make assumptions about the world, and for political or other reasons, try to get everyone all worked up over nothing, or at least nothing we can do anything about (ever try to stop it from raining, keep the wind from blowing, or delay sunset?) You never see the media making fun about the 'sky is falling' (Chicken Little and company) crowd any more. Perhaps the British accents add credibility or something. In fact, the media apparently believes this crap too, or for some reason wants everyone else to get sucked into this assumption as well.  Is it for scientific reasons?  Why would that make sense? Is it for historical purposes?  Financial purposes? Political purposes? Why else would someone want soccer moms and others to drive crappier cars... or even better, not drive cars at all?  Could someone want to take away some of the freedoms we enjoy, like doing what we want, where we want, and how we want?  In a perfect world, would 'they' have us all walking around on a Glacier??  What exactly is it that they want and why is it important that the average citizen worry about whether or not the Earth is warmer or cooler by less than a degree over a decade or more, when the temperature can go from -10 to 100 degrees in one year here on good old Cape Cod during what we refer to as seasons, and we survive just fine? THINK ABOUT IT....

I am not looking forward to another cold winter.  Perhaps I am getting older or something.  And I don't even drive an SUV.  But I do love freedom and all the rights endowed by our Creator, including the right to Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness...as stated so well in our American Declaration of Independence.  I am not real fond of those who use political correctness to alter the effectiveness of communication by barring the use of certain words, terms, or common sense.  I don't think experts who claim to know everything do.  I think the world is an absolutely amazing creation, designed by its Creator to endure, flourish, and evolve over a very long, long time.  The plants, animals, humans, and everything else put on this planet (or evolved from some single cell or dirt or something if that's what you believe) are just as amazing and complex. The way everything works together, independent yet dependent, simple yet complex, chaotic yet orderly could not, in my mind, have been a simple accidental event as some 'experts' might claim.  Could it?

I don't see global warming as a problem.  In fact, I was real glad when it finally got here this year. I don't believe if it does exist that people had anything to do with it, .  I don't think we (any of us) can make definitive assumptions about the future of this great planet based on our limited insight (and I have much less than those experts do mind you).  I don't chose to worry or fuss about the sky falling by those claiming global warming is America's fault or that people have anything to do with it.  Its illogical.  Its inconsistent.  Its whacky. Its bull...  and well, its probably just not accurate.  In any case, it's still a whole lot better than living under that glacier that once sat where I do.

THINK ABOUT IT!

Stay safe and start getting ready for global cooling, its coming! Experts agree...
